Insurance
Which type of Canada Travel Insurance should you buy?
Canada travel insurance is divided into three main sections: travel insurance for visiting Canada, outbound travel insurance and international student insurance. In the article, we will also talk about Super Visa Insurance, Medical Insurance for Health Card Waiting Period, Medical Insurance for Accompanying Parents and Roots Visa Insurance.
Visiting Canada Travel Insurance
It is often referred to as Travel Insurance for Visitors to Canada, Canadian Visitors Insurance, Canadian Temporary Medical Insurance, Canadian Parent Visitor Insurance, Super Visa Medical Insurance, or Canadian Private Medical Insurance.
Its English name: Medical Insurance for Visitors to Canada.
Medical Insurance for Visitors to Canada.
Purchased mainly for those who come to Canada on a tourist visa to visit relatives, tourists, or those who come to Canada on a work visa.
Since they are not eligible for the Canadian government’s health insurance program, they need to purchase Medical Insurance for Visitors to Canada in order to meet the high medical costs of hospitalization due to illness or accident.
For Chinese immigrants, their parents are visiting more and more often in Canada, which is the main demand of Canada travel insurance, therefore, Canada travel insurance is customarily called Canada parents visiting relatives insurance.
Super Visa Insurance
Purchased mainly for Super Visa applicants
The Super Visa provides parents or grandparents with a 10-year multiple-entry visa to Canada and a maximum of two years of residency each time they enter Canada.
According to the Canadian Immigration and Citizenship (CIC) regulations, proof of purchase of private medical insurance must be submitted with the Super Visa application. The requirements for this medical insurance are as follows: it must be purchased for at least one year; the insured amount of the medical insurance must be at least $100,000; and it must be a medical insurance policy issued by a Canadian company.
Temporary health insurance for the waiting period of the health card.
This is intended for new immigrants, newcomers to the province, or people who have moved to Canada from another province and do not have a provincial health card.
For new immigrants, returning residents or people who have moved from another province without a provincial health card, there is usually a one-month waiting period before they can take advantage of the Government of Canada’s health insurance program. During the three-month waiting period, newcomers can purchase temporary health insurance, known as Visitor Health Insurance.
Provincial regulations on the health card waiting period vary and can be found below
Health Card Waiting Period Temporary Health Insurance
This is mainly for new immigrants, people who are returning to their home province, or people who have moved to Canada from another province and do not have a provincial health card.
For new immigrants, returning residents or people who have moved to Canada without a provincial health card, there is usually a three-month waiting period before they can be covered by the Government of Canada’s health insurance program. During the three-month waiting period, newcomers can purchase temporary health insurance, also known as Visiting Canada Travel Health Insurance.
Outbound Travel Insurance
This is divided into two parts: traveling within Canada and traveling outside of Canada.
Travel insurance is available to residents of Canada who are covered by the Government of Canada’s health insurance program.
The public health insurance of each provincial government covers very little for outbound travel (in Ontario, the cost of overseas medical treatment for Ontario residents will be officially abolished as of January 1, 2020), so outbound travel insurance is also an important part of private health insurance in Canada.
For temporary visitors to Canada or newcomers waiting for a health card are not eligible to purchase outbound travel insurance for Canadians, but visiting tourists to Canada or newcomers with a health card waiting period who purchase travel insurance for visiting Canada are covered for outbound travel if they stay in Canada for more than 51% of their stay (except for trips to the country of original residence).
International Student Insurance
For international students coming to Canada to study. All international students should purchase International Student Health Medical Insurance when they arrive in Canada, as they may not be eligible for their provincial government’s Medicare health plan. Students studying in provinces where government health insurance is not available can only purchase health insurance from private insurance companies.
Accompanying Parent Health Insurance
Accompanying parent health insurance is actually a category of international student insurance. In recent years, there has been a trend of younger and younger international students coming from China, and it is now becoming more common for elementary school students to study abroad. Along with this, the number of accompanying parents is also increasing, and they spend as much time in Canada with their children as they do in school.
In the case of accompanying family members, they are required to live with the international student. All student plans can be sold to both the student and the accompanying family member if the accompanying family member and the student are purchasing together and for the same term of coverage.
